The world record for the 60-meter hurdles was broken by Bahamas runner Devynne Charlton on Sunday during the world athletics indoor championships.
In 7.65 seconds, Charlton triumphed, shaving 0.02 off the record she set on February 11 in New York. American runner Tia Jones matched her five days later in New Mexico.
Pia Skrzyszowska of Poland grabbed bronze in 7.79, while Cyrena Samba-Mayela of France finished second in 7.74.
Since beginning her season last month, Charlton, the silver medallist from the Commonwealth Games and the World Indoor Championship, has been performing at her best. In Louisville, Kentucky, she recorded an astounding time of 7.88 seconds, and a week later, she set a national record with a 7.75 second time.
She reported to World Athletics after the race, saying, "I heard the announcer say something that sounded like 'world record,' but it didn't hit me until I saw my name and time on the clock.”
“When I saw that clock, I felt relief. When you set a goal and work towards it all year, and then you achieve it, it makes you feel you're on top of the world.”
