A Connecticut man fighting for Ukraine on the front lines has lied for decades about being a US war hero — even to his once-loyal wife. He amassed a large following on social media and in the press was actually lying in order to make money. James Vasquez managed to gain over 400,000 followers on Twitter, and his false claims were even reported by reputable news outlets. He shared compelling pictures from the front lines and caused diplomatic controversy by asserting that he had access to US weapons.
This deception even extended to his wife, who has now ended their relationship. Furthermore, Vasquez fabricated his involvement with the US military. He falsely asserted that he had been deployed as a sergeant to Iraq and Kuwait, but the Pentagon confirmed that he was never sent on a military mission and held the rank of private first class, which is one of the lowest ranks in the Army, instead of being an experienced sergeant who has seen combat.
Vasquez admitted to the outlet that he had to fabricate numerous falsehoods in order to advance in life. However, he declined to provide further details about the reasons for his dismissal from the military, where he focused on fuel and electrical repairs rather than engaging in combat. He expressed surprise and regret about the exposé, stating that he did not anticipate it would reach this point.
His admission came as a significant surprise to his ex-wife, Tina Vasquez. When her husband initially traveled to Ukraine, she had proudly stated that war was a fundamental part of his identity. She had expressed admiration for his actions, mentioning how he had also rushed to help after the 9/11 attacks. She had regarded him as her hero. However, she now reveals that she was equally taken aback by his confession, just like everyone else.
It is important to note that Vasquez played a significant role in assisting a volunteer group called Ripley's Heroes in raising over $1 million to purchase war munitions. The founder of the group, Hunter "Rip" Rawlings IV, confirmed this amount to the Kyiv Post. However, Rawlings also expressed frustration with the negative impact of "Twitter smears and lies" and the hindrance caused by unfounded accusations on their efforts.
The volunteer group, Ripley's Heroes, stood by Vasquez and expressed their support for him, stating that they wished him the best and hoped that he would focus on his personal well-being.
Additionally, MSNBC commentator Malcolm Nance, who has collaborated extensively with Legion members involved in the conflict in Ukraine, also backed Vasquez. Nance tweeted in a supportive manner: “James [Vasquez] was NOT fake, he was troubled.”
