Expressing his admiration for Denmark's recent legislative action, the Prime Minister of Sweden, Ulf Kristersson, applauded Denmark's decision to criminalize the public desecration of religious scriptures. In a news conference, Kristersson commended the move while acknowledging the differing legal frameworks between Sweden and Denmark, especially in the face of terrorism threats.
Kristersson highlighted that Sweden would need to make constitutional amendments should it decide to follow Denmark's course of action. Denmark officially introduced a bill on Friday that aims to make the public burning of religious scriptures an offense.
Simultaneously, Sweden, referring to its existing Public Order Act, underlined its capacity to enhance the scrutiny of permit applications related to the public desecration of the Quran. In response to a query by Anadolu News Agency about the possibility of Sweden adopting a comparable stance, the Swedish Foreign Ministry emphasized the presence of a "permit system" that offers the flexibility to consider national security while reviewing applications.
The ministry explained, "Denmark is starting out from a different position," due to the variations in legal mechanisms.
It was noted that the Swedish government has initiated an inquiry to reassess its Public Order Act, aiming to incorporate security considerations into the evaluation of permit requests for public events. The ministry firmly stated that desecrating the Quran, or any revered scripture, is a disrespectful and provocative act.
Underscoring the government's rejection of such actions, the ministry emphasized that these acts do not reflect the sentiments of the Swedish populace or the official stance of the government.
Both Sweden and Denmark have faced considerable criticism for allowing incidents of public scripture desecration under the protection of law enforcement. Notable instances involve the burning of the Quran in various cities by individuals like Rasmus Paludan and Salwan Momika, which has sparked widespread controversy and debate on religious sensitivities.
These provocative actions have spurred discussions about the balance between freedom of expression and the need to respect religious beliefs, and they have prompted both countries to explore potential amendments to their legal frameworks in response to the complex challenges posed by such acts.
