Israeli Energy Minister Israel Katz has announced a drastic measure in response to the hostage crisis involving Hamas. He declared that Gaza will face a suspension of essential services, including electricity, water, and fuel, until the safe return of Israeli hostages held by the Hamas group.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Katz emphasized the link between the restoration of utilities and the release of the abducted Israelis. He stated, "No electrical switch will be turned on, no water hydrant will be opened, and no fuel truck will enter until the Israeli abductees are returned home. Humanitarian for humanitarian. And no one will preach us morals."
The hostage situation unfolded when Hamas militants crossed the heavily-fortified border into Israel, taking approximately 150 hostages, including Israeli army officers, back to Gaza. In response, Hamas issued a warning that they would commence executions if Israel targeted individuals in Gaza without prior notice.
Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus, a spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), acknowledged the complexity of the situation. He explained that while Israel has some experience with hostage situations, the current operation is unprecedented in terms of scale and complexity. Conricus suggested that the hostages may be kept underground to shield them from Israeli intelligence and rescue efforts. The IDF considers the situation "extremely sensitive and complex," with ongoing efforts to address the evolving crisis.
