Moscow has alleged that the United States is planning to interfere in Russia's upcoming presidential election by aiming to lower voter turnout, according to state media reports.
The Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) claimed that the administration of US President Joe Biden has tasked American NGOs with reducing turnout in the March 15-17 Russian presidential election. The SVR stated that Washington plans to achieve this through leading IT specialists and by launching cyberattacks on the electronic voting system, rendering it impossible to count votes from a significant portion of Russian voters.
According to the SVR, the intention behind this strategy is to create doubt about the election results in the eyes of the West. It suggested that the resulting decrease in turnout would provide grounds for questioning the legitimacy of the election outcome. The SVR warned that US political strategists may be at risk of misjudging the situation.
As of now, there has been no immediate response from US authorities regarding these allegations.
The Russian presidential election, which marks the first three-day presidential vote in the country's history, is scheduled to take place from March 15 to 17. Incumbent President Vladimir Putin is seeking a fifth term in office.
