If Kamala Harris succeeds Joe Biden as President, she is expected to continue his foreign policy initiatives, but with a notable difference on the Israeli war on Gaza, according to a report by NBC News.
Harris has demonstrated a willingness to publicly criticize Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and express empathy for Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip, a shift from Biden's approach. This could help her appeal to Arab American voters, younger voters, and progressives who oppose Biden's stance on Israel.
The report notes that Harris' ties to the Jewish community remain strong, with her husband, Doug Emhoff, being the first Jewish spouse of a vice president. However, analysts suggest that a Harris presidency may bring a more balanced rhetorical posture on Israel, with a greater emphasis on Palestinian statehood and rights.
According to Aaron David Miller, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, while Harris may alter the tone on Israel, substantial policy changes are unlikely. Miller expects Harris to maintain America's traditional support for Israel, but with a more moderate approach.
"Harris has very moderate views on Israel," Miller said. "To the left of what Biden is prepared to do but way to the right of those who argue we need to impose costs and consequences on Israel."
