The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has called for a full and immediate cease-fire in the Gaza Strip, following a recent UN Security Council resolution. Speaking at a press conference on global health issues, Tedros urged all parties to take immediate action to implement the resolution, which aims to bring an end to the suffering of millions.
The WHO chief expressed deep concern about the dire situation in Gaza, where over 37,200 people have been killed in Israeli attacks since October 7 last year. He emphasized that despite reports of increased food delivery, a significant portion of the population is still facing hunger and famine-like conditions, with many struggling to access essential food aid.
Tedros also highlighted the worsening situation in the occupied West Bank, where attacks on health care facilities and restrictions on movement are obstructing access to health services. He noted that clinics are only operating two days a week, and hospitals are running at 70% capacity, while the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements is further impacting access to healthcare.
The WHO chief urged all parties to take immediate action to address the humanitarian crisis and ensure that those who need food aid most are receiving it in sufficient quantity and quality. He emphasized that the situation in Gaza and the West Bank is not only a humanitarian crisis but also a violation of human rights and international law.
