A large group of students and activists from the University College Dublin (UCD) gathered on campus to mark the 76th anniversary of the Nakba, a significant event in Palestinian history. The demonstration was held in solidarity with the Palestinian people and to condemn the Israeli occupation.
Protesters carried Palestinian flags and held signs that read "Nakba never ended" and "Increase the resistance". They also marched to a nearby bridge, carrying a symbolic baby wrapped in white cloth to raise awareness about the babies and children killed in the Israeli onslaught on Gaza. Another symbol, a "key", was used to represent the homes lost by Palestinians during the Nakba.
Richard Boyd Barrett, a member of the Irish House of Representatives, spoke out against his government's failure to impose sanctions on Israel amid rising tensions and violence in Palestinian territories. He expressed support for the student-led protests and condemned the international support that Israel receives from Western governments, particularly the US.
Barrett emphasized that the Israeli occupation is based on violence, ethnic cleansing, and genocidal policies against the Palestinian people. He called for decisive action against the Israeli occupation and urged institutions like universities to break their links with the apartheid regime.
