Boeing has announced that it has discovered a new defect on its 787 Dreamliner jets, which will require inspection and rework before delivery. The defect is related to a fitting on the horizontal stabilizer, which is a part of the tail that helps control the pitch of the plane. Boeing said the defect is not a safety risk and planes that are already in service can continue to fly.
The company said it has informed the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and its customers about the issue. Boeing’s stock price dropped by nearly 4% after the news.
The 787 Dreamliner is one of Boeing’s most popular and advanced commercial aircraft, but it has faced several production and quality issues in the past. The FAA allowed Boeing to resume deliveries of the 787 in August after a long suspension due to various flaws in manufacturing, which cost the company $5.5 billion, according to Boeing’s estimate in January 2022.
The delivery delays have affected Boeing’s customers, such as United Airlines and American Airlines, who have been waiting for new Dreamliners as air travel demand recovered from the coronavirus pandemic.
