Sources reported on Friday that a kamikaze unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was deployed in an air attack on the Shaddadi Base, a US facility located in southern Hasakah, northwestern Syria. The base houses American soldiers, and the strike marks the fourth such incident since the beginning of 2024, involving rockets and kamikaze UAVs targeting US bases in Syria. The Shaddadi Base attack follows previous incidents in the Al-Tanf region, Malikiyya district, and Deir ez-Zor province.
The affiliation of the assailants remains unknown, and details about casualties in the Shaddadi attack have not been disclosed by the US authorities. Notably, Deir ez-Zor territories, situated east of the Euphrates River, are contested, with the US-backed PKK/YPG controlling some areas and others under the authority of Syria's Bashar al-Assad regime and Iran-backed groups.
Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued a statement on October 17, warning of "resistance forces" taking action if Israeli attacks persisted. Subsequently, kamikaze drones and rockets targeted US military bases in Syria and Iraq, with Iranian-backed groups in both countries claiming responsibility.
The US, attributing the attacks to Iran, announced multiple air raids on facilities utilized by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and affiliated groups in eastern Syria starting from October 27. The situation continues to unfold, with the region witnessing heightened tensions and a series of targeted attacks on military installations.
