Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mahamud has pledged $10 million towards addressing climate change, desertification, and preserving biodiversity in Somalia.
During the launch of the Great Green Wall Initiative (GGWI) in Mogadishu, President Mahamud announced this financial commitment, which will be part of Somalia's allocation from the adaptation fund in collaboration with the International Fund for Agricultural Development.
Somalia has recently become the newest member state of the African Union to join the Great Green Wall Initiative, which already includes 36 countries from the drylands of Sahara, Sahel, Horn of Africa, and Southern Africa.
President Mahamud emphasized that this initiative marks a significant milestone in Somalia's dedication to tackling climate change and environmental degradation, which have inflicted considerable hardships on the nation's population.
A United Nations report suggests that Somalia may have experienced approximately 43,000 "excess deaths" in 2022 due to a worsening drought compared to the years 2017 and 2018.
This highlights the devastating impact of climate change on the country. It is worth noting that Africa, as a continent, is increasingly vulnerable to climate-related shocks, despite contributing only around 4% of the global greenhouse gas emissions.
This underscores the urgent need for global efforts to address climate change and support vulnerable regions like Africa in adapting to its consequences.
