In a significant address to the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Saudi Arabia has called for a just and comprehensive resolution to the Palestinian issue, highlighting its crucial role in ensuring security and stability in the Middle East.
Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan emphasized, "The security of the Middle East region necessitates the expedited pursuit of a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue." He stressed that this solution should be rooted in international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative, guaranteeing the Palestinian people's right to establish their independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on the 1967 borders.
While the Oslo Accords of 1993 provided Palestinians with a form of civil rule, negotiations ultimately failed to lead to the establishment of a Palestinian state. US-sponsored peace talks between Palestinians and Israelis collapsed in April 2014 due to disputes over settlement building and the release of Palestinian detainees.
Saudi Arabia's top diplomat reiterated the kingdom's firm stance against "all unilateral actions" that violate international laws, expressing concern that such actions undermine regional and international peace efforts, hindering the pursuit of political solutions.
This call for a just solution comes amidst growing speculation regarding a potential US-mediated normalization agreement between Saudi Arabia and Israel. Riyadh has consistently maintained that any deal with Israel must include provisions advancing the establishment of a Palestinian state, a condition Israel has thus far rejected.
Currently, six Arab countries have diplomatic ties with Israel, beginning with Egypt in 1979 and followed by Jordan in 1994. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain established diplomatic relations with Israel in September 2020, and Sudan and Morocco followed suit later that year. Saudi Arabia's stance underscores the continued significance of the Palestinian issue in the region's geopolitics and peace efforts.
