Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot and injured in an attack on Wednesday, leaving him with serious polytrauma and undergoing surgery. The attacker was detained, and authorities are still investigating the motives behind the attack, which has been widely condemned by leaders around the world.
According to reports, the attack occurred when an attacker fired several shots in front of the House of Culture in the central city of Handlova, where a government meeting was held. Fico, who was taken to hospital, is currently undergoing surgery in a Banska Bystrica hospital.
The incident has been met with widespread condemnation from leaders around the world, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Charles Michel, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and many others. As Fico's condition remains uncertain, Slovakia's President Zuzana Caputova has condemned the attack in the "strongest possible terms," wishing the prime minister a speedy recovery.
