The second and the final suspect in the Canada stabbing spree died shortly after his arrest due to self-inflicted wounds. The suspect was arrested after a four-day manhunt.
"Myles Sanderson was located and taken into police custody near Rosthern, Saskatchewan, at approximately 3.30 pm today (Wednesday)," Saskatchewan police said in a statement.
Following a chase, Sanderson surrendered himself to police and was taken away alive in an ambulance.
His arrest came two days after his brother and co-accused Damien was found dead. The Royal Canadian Mountain Police (RCMP) found Damien’s body on Monday in a grassy area on the First Nation.
Hours after the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported he had been taken into custody, the official word that the four-day manhunt for Myles Sanderson, 30, ended with his death came during a late-night news conference.
RCMP Assistant Commissioner Rhoda Blackmore told reporters Sanderson "went into medical distress" shortly after he was detained, that emergency medical personnel on the scene attended to him and he was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police were investigating whether Myles, the younger brother, killed his brother and later said that he himself have sustained injuries that required medical treatment.
According to police, they got a tip-off about a person who was reported to be armed with a knife, driving a stolen truck and was sighted in the town of Wakaw and in the city of Prince Albert.
He was spotted in a 2008 white Chevrolet Avalanche with Saskatchewan license plate No. 953 LPL. The vehicle was reported stolen at 2:10 p.m. local time, the RCMP said, reports CBS news.
Myles was charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, and breaking and entering. His brother, Damien, was also facing charges before he was found dead on Monday.
Myles had been a fugitive since May after he stopped meeting his parole officer after serving for assault, robbery, and other offences.
As per a reported examination by Reuters of parole record, Myles accrued 59 offences over the course of 20 years.
The attack, which left 18 people injured in addition to the victims dead, alarmed a nation where mass murder is rare.
All the victims, except one, were members of the Cree community. The other was a widower who lived with his adult grandson in nearby Weldon. Those wounded in the attack were 17 adults and one young teen, police said.
